Those with a bachelor’s degree in human resources typically enter the field as HR specialists, earning a median annual salary of $67,650. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that employment for this position will grow 6% by 2032. Students with advanced degrees can become HR managers and earn a median yearly salary of $136,350. According to the BLS, there will be 15,500 openings for HR managers annually through 2032.

An online human resources degree program should prepare students for various responsibilities within the HR field, including recruiting and hiring, managing employee compensation and benefits, understanding employment laws and regulations, training and evaluating employees, resolving disputes, and more.

At the bachelor’s level, students learn fundamental and intermediate HR skills and concepts. Most bachelor’s programs will feature a core curriculum and electives that allow students to focus on a specific area within human resources. There will also be general education requirements, although the amount varies based on the type of degree, which include a Bachelor of Science (BS), Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), or a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA). It’s common for undergraduate students to complete an internship in HR as part of their degree.

Another option students should be aware of is a five-year bachelor’s/master’s program. These programs allow students to begin taking graduate-level courses while they complete their bachelor’s degree, which can help students earn an advanced degree in an accelerated time frame.

Students should also consider whether their program prepares them for professional certifications, common in HR. Many employers seek job candidates with credentials to demonstrate their expertise and experience. How to Choose the Online Human Resources Degree Program That’s Right for You

Step 1: Clarify your goals and needs

At the start of your search for an online HR degree program, it’s a good idea to establish clear goals for your education and career. “I encourage students to start by reflecting on their academic interests, career goals, and the types of learning environments they thrive in to identify the best programs for them,” Villagomez says. “Students should consider which subjects or topics they enjoy learning in and outside the classroom. Understanding these academic interests can help students choose a major and co-curricular activities. I also encourage students to reflect on what goals they want to accomplish during college, even if they’re general and not clearly defined at this stage.”

Some questions students can ask themselves to help guide their decisions include:

  • What type of HR job do you want, and what skills will you need to qualify for those positions?
  • Do you want a general HR degree or a specialization like talent training and development or compensation and benefits management?
  • What degree type best suits your current education and professional experience level?

Also, take some time to reflect on practical and logistical needs. Determine if you will enroll full-time or part-time to find a program with the needed option. Online students must also decide if they prefer asynchronous or synchronous classes. Asynchronous classes provide more flexibility, as there are no set class meetings in this structure. However, students in synchronous courses may interact more with faculty and classmates through pre-scheduled classes. Another consideration for online students is whether they can accommodate in-person requirements, such as an internship.

Step 2: Research schools and programs

Before deep-diving into research on a school, students should confirm that the institution is accredited. Says Villagomez, “With institutional accreditations, colleges, and universities are evaluated as a whole and must achieve rigorous quality standards to receive regional or national accreditation. Programmatic accreditations evaluate the quality and legitimacy of the specific degree programs.” HR degree programs can be accredited by agencies like the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) or the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). Villagomez adds, “Attending a non-accredited college can negatively impact future post-graduate opportunities such as employment and master’s degree programs.”

There are several other questions students should answer as they conduct their research:

  • Who are the faculty, and what are their qualifications?
  • How do online students interact with classmates and faculty?
  • Is coursework delivered synchronously or asynchronously?
  • What does the curriculum include? Are there options for electives or specializations?
  • Can students receive credit for professional experience or credentials?
  • What support services are available for online students, such as tech support, tutoring, academic and career advising, and counseling?
  • What networking opportunities are there for online students?

Most schools will publish relevant information for prospective students on their websites. Students can also contact program representatives or admissions counselors for more information. Schools often offer virtual open houses or information sessions for online programs to allow remote students to interact with program reps. Another option is following schools and departments on social media.

Step 3: Prepare for applications and tests

Each school sets its own application procedures and policies, so it’s always a good idea to check with an admissions counselor before starting an application.

“After researching the degree programs and schools, students should have a strong sense of the admission requirements,” Villagomez says. “Highly selective schools often require well-crafted essays, standardized exams, recommendation letters, and interviews. With all these requirements, students must stay organized to track their progress, submit all required materials, and meet deadlines. I encourage students to decide what systems help them organize the application requirements and track their progress for each school.”

Applicants to associate or bachelor’s degree programs may have to submit SAT or ACT scores, although schools are increasingly moving to test-optional policies. Those applying as transfer students from a different institution must submit official transcripts from their previous colleges for transfer credit evaluations.

There may be additional requirements at the graduate level, such as professional experience, a bachelor’s degree in HR or a related field, a minimum undergraduate GPA, or prerequisite coursework. Applicants may have to submit GRE or GMAT scores or participate in an interview.

International applicants often have to submit additional documents, including an official transcript evaluation and ESL test scores.

Step 4: Select your program

Compare the research you’ve compiled on the different options for schools and programs. Depending on how many schools you’re considering, you should rank them according to priorities such as overall cost, curriculum, faculty, financial aid availability, and more. Doing so can help you determine which schools you’ll apply to. Some students only submit one or two applications, while others apply to multiple schools. There’s no magic number, but students should remember that if they’re applying to a high volume of schools, application fees can quickly add up.
